New Drum

J & E Sedgwick have invested in a new high tech drum which replaces the old drum, after serving us for 25 years. The old traditional drums have historically been made from Oak and have served us well for many years. Today we still have three Oak drums that continue to re-tan our leather.

Why a new Plastic drum? We have invested in a plastic drum for many reasons. The main reason is its flexibility to drum a variety of leathers, at different variable speeds and ultimately gives our tanning department a wide range of innovative ideas and finishes.

In addition to the new drum, Sedgwick’s also invested in laying a new floor in its tannery department. The pictures below show the different stages of removing and installation of the floor and drum. The whole operation took 4 weeks, from the beginning of August 2008.

The new drum is now in position. The drum is narrower than all of the other drums installed at Sedgwick's. However, the internal dimensions of the new drum is virtually the same as the old drums.

The new drum, nearing operation status is being fitted with safety cages. This drum will be used for the dyeing of leather. It will enable the leather to be more uniform, produce less friction on the grain of the leather and will be fully heat insulated to ensure the leather has been processed to a higher spec.
